So, in between hospital visits, I checked out Winnipeg's Fort Garry skatepark. It's actually next to a marginal spot we use to hit back in the day - a real shallow spray park dish.
It's kind of hard to properly evaluate this park. On one hand if it was made by a legitimate skatepark company it's pretty "whatever." Way too many roll-ins where there should be 1/4's and most of the rails are really small and low. Also, the end of the banks (2nd picture) and start of the rollers/snake run thing is crying out for a 1/4 pipe or something to help you keep speed. However, if this was made by some sort of construction company it's pretty impressive. I did really like the little pseudo snake run thingy.I talked to one local whose only complaint was the fact that the park lacks a simple flat bar and a box that doesn't also have an accompanying drop or launch. However, he also bemoaned the fact that the park didn't have a place to play skate. Skate!?! You live in Winnipeg. Your whole flat city is a place to play skate!!! Seriously, I really hope skatepark developers can stand strong in the upcoming Berric's fuelled onslaught of skate toddlers who are going to start demanding nothing more from a skatepark, other than a flat area in which to play skate. I picture some really lame park development meetings in the future.
